EARWORM: Todd McHatton's "I Think I'm A Bunny"

I was on my way to an event in NY last year when I heard this on the radio (Kid's Place Live, naturally) for the first time.

It appealed to me in a number of ways.

  • It's got a simple and infectious song behind it
  • It's got a kid talking to a monster in it,
  • It's got this wonderfully weird vibe that put my spidey sense into overdrive.
As soon as I heard it, I pulled the car over, whipped out my phone, and had to find out more about the song.  Was it from a television show?  And why don't I watch that show?

It turns out, it's the last track of Todd McHatton's album Galactic Champions of Joy.

Todd is a musician and puppeteer and comic book artist who has created a whole raft of characters that sing, and his daughter is featured in this song, as a contrary girl who will not let the monster get away with thinking that he is a bunny.

I love this song for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that it's a great example of creating art with your kids.

Here's a few of the lyrics.  The exchange is between a purple monster and a young girl.

You know what? / What? / I think I’m a bunny... / But you're not a bunny, you're a monster / But I think I’m a bunny / Bunnies aren’t purple / I think I'm a bunny / You're not a bunny / I think I'm a bunny / You’re not a bunny / I think I'm a bunny... / No you're not / I think I'm a bunny / I don't think you're right/ I think I'm a bunny / You're not a bunny / You’re a monster... / But I might be a bunny / You know I could be a bunny / Yeah, I think I'm probably a bunny 'cause, you know, I've got these long ears, you know, and sometimes I like to have a carrot or something, you know

It's hilarious, it's heartwarming, and you should listen to it.  Even better, watch the amazing handmade video that Todd and his daughter made.

Now, you should go out and buy the album!

And then buy the rest of his albums.  They are that good!
